Obama remains in the White House

Democrat Barack Obama is the new president of the United States, to ensure last night over the 270 electoral votes he needed, as agreed to announce the major television and held the president himself in his twitter account.

At 11:15 on the night of the East Coast (04:15 GMT) the first television gave Obama reelected.

Shortly thereafter, Obama himself "confirmed".

"Four years," he wrote next to a picture in which he is seen hugging his wife, Michelle.

In a career that was defined earlier than expected, Obama secured the victory to get the votes in Iowa and Ohio, which added another "swing states" like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and New Hampshire. This hi-zo unnecessary to know the outcome of other states considered key as Florida, where counting overnight had a matched battle with rival Mitt Romney. This, in the end, could not beat the Democratic expectations despite a campaign that stretch for weeks remained very close, according to the polls, and he had done the less predict a long night of counting, which is also not fulfilled.

The key was the indirect election system, in which states choose delegates to the Electoral College, where it takes 270 votes of 538 members to be elected President.

In another twist, a product of the peculiar American electoral system, the Republican candidate won more popular votes than Obama. According to preliminary calculations CNN, Romney won 51% of the popular vote compared to 48% for Obama.

Romney phoned Obama, conceded defeat and congratulated him on the victory. Then he gave a speech in which he briefly called for a unity government to Obama.
